Did I fall for rage bait? |
There has been discussion on TikTok (I believe started by these podcast clips) on whether lake beaches should be considered real beaches. As a lifelong Michigander, this confused me. Of course they are! Are there really people out there who think otherwise? Even if you were to disregard inland lakes, the Great Lakes offer several sandy shores and waves. It's been a goal of mine to not engage with such bewildering statements, so I'll leave this conversation alone. If the ocean-lovers think there's no beach here, that's less tourist traffic for us. |

In May and June 2024, a bowfishing team from Thundering Aspens Sportsman Club removed four large koi from Glen Lake in Northern Michigan, including a 32-inch, 24.5-pound pre-spawn female which the Glen Lake Association says set a world record for Japanese koi harvested with a bow. The fish were hunted as part of an invasive species removal contract. (Photo provided by Rob Kerner, Glen Lake Association) |

Gov. Whitmer signs $59B budget with dollars for housing, police resources |
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed the $59 billion spending plan for state agencies and departments in 2025. The budget includes $150 million to support reopening the Palisades Nuclear Plant, $100 million to construct more affordable housing and $45.5 million toward growing the state’s population and helping businesses with workforce needs. During the 'True Gretch' Book Talk: Whitmer said President Joe Biden dropping out of the race was "a surprise" and the "right move.” Bye: Michigan’s experiment with digital license plates is coming to an end, for now at least. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson earlier this month sent letters to about 1,700 drivers with digital license plates stating that they will have to go back to a standard metal plate. |

Michigan dry spell won’t last long, next rain speeding up |
Forecast: We do have several dry and nice weather days coming for all of Michigan. Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be dry and will have some sun. The parade of rain systems is not going to take a big break however. The next rain is moving toward us from a not-so-frequent trajectory. Temperature: Forecasting patterns that support hot temperatures in Michigan can be tricky because it only takes one weak upper-level disturbance to suppress temperatures and keep them down for a few days. Right now, the upper-level pattern looks to be supportive of temperatures in the upper 80s to near 90 for a good portion of next week. When “Twister” came out in 1996, not only was it a box office success, but it influenced an entire generation of future meteorologists. Experts now wonder if the new “Twisters” will have that same effect. |

A donor’s heart and lungs gave 2 Michigan women new life |
Connected forever: In 2020, Suzanne Karrer, 53, made the ultimate gift of life by donating her organs after she died, which saved the lives of two Michigan women on the same day. Gloria Kirshman, 69, from Linden, received Karrer's heart, while Carla Bussell, 52, from Brownstown, was given the gift of breath with a double lung transplant from Karrer. In a meeting at Kirshman's home, Karrer's husband, Hans "Martin" Karrer, and their daughter, Serena Karrer, were present in her place. This encounter was filled with gratitude, tears, and the profound realization of the extraordinary bond they now shared through Suzanne Karrer's selfless act. A display of bravery: An elderly woman was rescued from Lake St. Clair by a 15-year-old boy who was fishing when her car went into the water. Walking free: A man convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1987 has been released and will not go to trial again thanks to evidence that was introduced 33 years after his conviction. |

Sensational semifinal wins set up Little League state championship showdown |
Richmond and Tecumseh set up a championship showdown in the Little League Major Baseball state tournament, coming through with big-time victories in the semifinals of the Michigan tourney for age 12-and-under. More on the DQ’d team: Coach Tommy Stubbe had planned to fire up his pint-sized players with a pregame talk. Not break their Little League hearts. But when the Taylor North all-star coach gathered his boys Tuesday – right about the time they were expecting to take the field – he delivered the news. Taylor North had been disqualified from the Little League Major Baseball state tournament two wins shy of the crown. In 10 years: The Winter Olympics are returning to the United States. The International Olympic Committee announced that Salt Lake City, Utah will host the games in 2034. The city last hosted the games in 2002. |

Another record year for Great Lakes piping plover breeding |
It’s been another record-setting breeding season for Great Lakes piping plovers. Wildlife monitoring of the endangered species this summer resulted in a consecutive year for setting a record for the number of unique piping plover breeding pairs, breaking the record set last year. This year observers documented 81 unique pairs of piping plovers across the Great Lakes. To know: Michigan counties and delegated authorities which regulate inland lake levels have more leeway to allow temporary fluctuations in water level based on weather, natural events or construction activities under a new state law. In energy news: The Palisades Nuclear Power Plant near South Haven could be back online and generating electricity in just over a year, according to the top U.S. nuclear regulatory official. |
