Situational Analysis | October 2, 2023

It's Monday, and the beginning of Family History Month. It's also National Child Health Day, first proclaimed by President Calvin Coolidge in 1928.

What You Need to Know

  • The government, with less than an hour to spare, did not shut down Saturday night. After multiple attempts to pass various iterations of bills to fund the federal government, a Continuing Resolution passed both bodies and was signed by the President at 11:15 pm Saturday night. The CR is a 45-day stopgap measure that keeps spending at 2023 levels, with additional funds for disaster relief but no additional funds for Ukraine. The resolution passed 335-91 in the House and 88-9 in the Senate. Four of the five members of Utah's federal delegation supported the bill, with Sen. Mike Lee being the sole "no" vote.

  • Rep. Matt Gaetz has promised to introduce a motion this week to remove Speaker McCarthy from his leadership position after McCarthy relied on support from House Democrats to pass the continuing resolution that keeps the government funded. McCarthy's response: Bring it on.

News Releases

Curtis on the bipartisan CR that averted a government shutdown

Today, in a significant display of bipartisanship, Congress passed a clean Continuing Resolution (CR) aimed at averting a government shutdown, securing vital government services, and providing more time for the completion of appropriations bills. The CR, which received substantial support across party lines, ensures that the government remains funded for an additional 45 days.

“Today’s passage of the Continuing Resolution is a positive step to avoiding a government shutdown,” said Rep. Curtis. “While I’m pleased with this outcome, it’s disheartening that some of my colleagues, who call themselves conservatives, didn’t support an earlier resolution that prioritized resources towards addressing critical border security issues.” (Read More)

Moore on the CR to fund government

Today, Congressman Blake Moore voted in favor of the continuing resolution to keep the government funded and released the following statement:

“I was proud to join the Utah House delegation and vote for today’s continuing resolution that will ensure the servicemen and women at Hill Air Force Base and the over 40,000 federal workers, uniformed personnel, and military dependents in my district continue to receive a paycheck for their work and service.
