GT Celebrates the 2020 Top 25

In a far different country than the one we had a few months back when we started the nomination process, Government Technology this week announced its Top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers. Twenty-three individuals and two teams are being recognized for their visionary work in and alongside government strengthening connectivity, streamlining processes and working for a tech-informed future that effectively serves citizens. Hear from five of our honorees on a special episode of the GovTech360 podcast, and read their profiles on Govtech.com.

COVID-19 Impacts Know No Bounds

There doesn’t seem to be a single sector of the population that isn’t affected by the growing COVID-19 pandemic now spreading across the country, and GT is covering as many stories as we can. In education, transitioning to home learning has underscored the lack of connectivity and device options in a large percentage of U.S. households.

On the emerging tech front, other countries faced with the outbreak have turned to drones to do things like transport medical equipment and perform surveillance. In the U.S., however, it does not appear likely that virus-related uses will be approved in time to help. Meanwhile, cybercriminals continue to capitalize on the recent dramatic growth in telework and virus-related panic, with phishing and malware among the most popular tactics.

Gov IT Community Gets to Work

The massive shift from physical offices to telework has challenged government chief information officers to restore productivity to their newly mobile workforces. We talked to a handful of CIOs who revealed the tools they’re using to enable the transition. And in an attempt to fill any gaps felt by IT organizations in government, a new platform is now matching tech talent with governments in need due to COVID-19. Early reports from officials involved — three founders are deputy chief technology officers in the federal government — indicate that volunteers and governments in need are getting connected in large numbers.
