Transit’s Next Chapter

It’s hard to come up with a sector of the economy that won’t experience long-term disruption as a result of the pandemic. Public transit schedules have thinned out considerably due to decreased ridership since the COVID-19 outbreak began, but planners are hard at work on what the next phase of urban mobility will look like. GT’s Skip Descant documented a conversation between experts at last week’s Shared Mobility Summit about coming changes including vehicle design, route planning and transportation network company operations.

Cyberaudit Targets Oregon State Police

A recent audit by a division of the Oregon Secretary of State’s office found holes in the cybersecurity practices of the Oregon State Police (OSP). The report said the agency lacked “basic cybersecurity safeguards,” owing in part to staff and resource deficiencies, including a lack of stable technical leadership since 2014. A spokesperson for the OSP said it will use the audit as a baseline to improve its cybersecurity posture.

Help Wanted: Contact Tracers

Governments across the country are looking to staff up in a critical area at a time when many Americans are looking for work. A free training course recently made available online aims to train people to become contact tracers – a new term gaining ground as the U.S. moves into the next phase of its COVID-19 response. The six-hour course comes courtesy of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and New York state is the first to require the course for its statewide program.

Government Job Loss by the Numbers

New data validates the fact that local governments have started to react to the financial repercussions of the pandemic. Unplanned coronavirus-related spending, coupled with revenue shortfalls are bringing about furloughs and even layoffs in the public-sector workforce. GT’s Associate Editor Ben Miller breaks down the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Other recent GT data pieces include a look at unemployment insurance claims in recent weeks, cities’ expectations regarding service cuts to come, and an interactive map of reported coronavirus cases across the country.
