The Virginia Lottery learned a valuable lesson recently, despite the best of intentions. Aiming for a website refresh to streamline content and be more mobile-friendly, officials neglected to check in with one key constituency, the users, therefore leaving out a critical component of the process: user experience (UX) testing. Biz Beat: Another GovTech 100 Company Makes the S&P 500

Offering further proof that government-focused tech companies are worth paying attention to, Tyler Technologies a publicly traded software firm in the public sector, just made the S&P 500. While technically the second GT 100 company on the list, Tyler, unlike Motorola Solutions, works only with government clients.

Wisconsin Promotes from Within

There’s a new face in the chief information officer seat in Wisconsin, following the departure of longtime teach leader David Cagigal earlier this month. GT broke the news this week that his successor will be Trina Zanow, a 25-year veteran of Wisconsin state government. Prior to becoming CIO, Zanow was deputy administrator of the Division of Enterprise Technology.

Modern Foster Care System Comes to New Mexico

The state of New Mexico was already in need of a new system to simplify its foster care file system, but the pandemic made the situation even more urgent. A newly remote workforce was struggling to interact with its COBOL-based system, prompting the change to digital workflows with Binti, a California-based company that also recently contracted with the state of Rhode Island. Binti is a graduate of San Francisco’s Startup in Residence (STiR) program.
