CISA, Take the Wheel

State and local governments have advocated for a while now for a federal agency to offer a single source of leadership when it comes to cybersecurity. And increasingly, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) seems poised to take the helm. While numerous proposed laws aim to increase its responsibility, GT’s Lucas Ropek chronicled the agency’s meandering path toward helping governments other than federal, as well as the private sector, navigate the latest threats.  

Cyberpandemic Quantified

Also in cybersecurity news this week, there’s growing evidence to support the claim that COVID-19 is emboldening hackers. While this isn’t news to organizations on the receiving end of phishing and ransomware attacks in recent months, several reports specifically document an exponential increase in malicious activity aimed at public institutions in education, health care and local government, to name a few.

 Work-from-Home: Oakland County, Mich., Edition

In the metropolitan Detroit area, Oakland County, Mich., like jurisdictions across the country, shifted most of its workforce to home offices in the middle of March. Among the tools they used to transition thousands of employees and contractors out of their physical buildings was virtual desktops, supplemented by multi-factor authentication, to ensure the staff could remain productive and secure. And the new way of working persists to this day, according to the county’s Chief Technology Officer E.J. Widun. “We are still trying to keep the workforce remote as much as we can,” he said.  

Innovation’s New Face in San Jose

Several gov tech leaders have announced career moves lately, and San Jose, Calif., leads the pack with the announcement of incoming Chief Innovation Officer Jordan Sun. Sun comes with a varied background in many areas, most recently serving as an Army Reserve officer in Afghanistan, where he held a technology position on the Special Operations Joint Task Force.
