Digital Services for All?

Government has a responsibility to serve all the people, not just the tech-savvy ones, so the recent pandemic-driven push toward more online service delivery has heightened concerns about equal access. In this piece from Oakland, Calif.-based nonprofit Alluma CEO Robert Phillips, he offers five technical fixes that would help government better reach people that can be left behind by current methods.

Szczurek Out, Grant In

A couple of big leadership changes hit state CIO offices this week, with Colorado CIO Theresa Szczurek announcing that August will be her last full month at the helm. And in Florida, a state legislator who has been active in structural changes to the state’s IT operation will now be in charge of them. Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Jamie Grant as the new CIO on Thursday, following Grant’s recent announcement that he would not seek re-election.

The 411 on 311

The pandemic has underscored the essential nature of many government services, and 311 call centers are one such necessity. And the questions citizens call in with have taken on more urgency recently – as while potholes and recycling dates are important, they’re arguably not as pressing as needs for food and health-care services. In another example of a quick, citizen-focused pivot, the city of Buffalo, N.Y., minimized downtime back in March when it took its call center from physical to virtual over a weekend.
