The Manor Independent School District near Austin, Texas, lost $2.3 million when it fell victim to a recent phishing attack perpetrated via email. A popular tactic that mimics legitimate digital communications, phishing emails lure recipients into disclosing account information that enables the theft. The nation’s largest county, however, was able to thwart a similar attack that arrived in the inboxes of two dozen county employees last month. Despite preventing any resident data from being exposed, Chief Information Officer Bill Kehoe told GT that Los Angeles County would use the attempt as an opportunity to examine its “security posture” for possible improvements.
