Graspop Metal Meeting 2015 was a vintage edition!

Graspop Metal Meeting came one week early this year but that didn’t put a damper on this year’s festivities. Last weekend, an army of 152,000 metalheads recruited from 80 nationalities invaded Dessel. The weather gods had a bit of everything in store, from glorious sunshine to driving rain. As for the quality of the bands and the performances, there’s no denying GMM2015 was a vintage edition so our gratitude goes out to the 109 bands who were responsible for 5,480 minutes of unadulterated metal pleasure! Incidentally, did you know that GMM welcomed 50 newcomers this year?

25,000 campers arrived on Thursday for a weekend of musical pleasure, beer and entertainment. The RedBull Bedroom Jam in the Metal Dome, a generous helping of pure Belgian talent on the Jupiler Stage and the Monsters of Metal Tribute Party in the Marquee made the first festival day a roaring success!
On stage, the central themes on Friday were girl power and nostalgia. Off stage, we made some adjustments and came up with a few novelties that met with general approval. Last year’s Skydeck was moved to a much more prominent location in front of the two main stages. The price for enjoying the unique panorama was a contribution to the environment. Fans that handed in twenty empty cups or bottles at the collection point got to try their luck at the ‘Ducks of Thrash’. The points on the underside of the ducks were added up and you either won a ticket to the Skydeck, a ticket to the fast signing lane, a fun GMM souvenir or a backstage tour. As it turns out, recycling can be fun and even the toughest metalheads are in for a hook-a-duck game: a whopping 253,400 empty cups and bottles were handed in! We also gave the VIP lounge a makeover: more luxury, an even better atmosphere and a larger menu.

When the metal hordes flooded the gates on Saturday, it was immediately apparent the second festival day was sold out. The festival arena filled up nicely by noon, much to the delight of the bands in the early slots. Another noteworthy fact about Saturday was the preponderance of American bands: no fewer than 13 out of the 32 bands in the day’s line-up hailed from the land of Uncle Sam.

Sunday is traditionally a family day and Graspop is no different – even if metal moms and dads sport a slightly rougher look than the average parent. The forecast was for rain but a legion of screaming guitars dispelled the threat and kept the dark clouds at bay.
What was most striking about this anniversary edition was the feeling of community. If you were there, you’ll definitely know what we mean. GMM is a unique event with a pleasant crowd. Every year, tens of thousands of metal fans flock to Dessel to enjoy the music and the exceptional atmosphere.

A special thank you goes out to the fans, crew, suppliers, associations, sponsors and media partners. Thanks to you our twentieth anniversary edition will go down in history as a landmark edition!
