Yesterday was my birthday -- 52! -- and I had dinner with my cousins, Kekoa and Steven, their families, my aunty Sue and uncle Bill, my best friend, Jen, and my son, Kiaha, and his family. Since it was a work and school night, most folks started leaving around 8, but Kekoa and his family lingered. We sat around my dining table, nibbling on cake and leftover pizza and chatting.
Conversation turned to a young man named Dorian,* my nephew Vince’s best friend. Dorian is struggling to make some decisions about college -- stay home and go to a local junior college or accept an offer to play football at a Division 1 school out of state. He turned to Vince for counsel.
At first, Vince listened with patience and compassion. He knew his friend was under tremendous stress. But as the conversation wore on and Dorian continued to waffle, Vince knew he had to be honest with his friend.
“Dude, you have to pick your hard,” Vince said. He understood that both options came with steep challenges. Going away meant not having any friends or family nearby, but staying meant possibly cutting off future scholarship offers and -- worse -- running into issues with his family. Either way would be tough, but that was the price of hitting the goal, Vince said.
Vince’s words sank deep into me, convicting me. I made the decision that, as I embark on my new year, I will be more intentional about moving on goals. Instead of dragging my feet and looking for shortcuts, I will grab hold of my focus and embrace the road ahead. All of it, potholes and all.
And when I hit those goals, I will enjoy the gratification that comes from “picking my hard.”
