High temperatures Thursday will be cooler, mainly in the 40s to low 50s. The chilly days will set up for frosty and freezing nights. Thursday night will see temperatures drop to or below freezing nearly statewide. Get the latest on Updraft.

Growing the ‘flowers of the dead’
Farmer Rodrigo Cala grows cempasuchil, the iconic flower which helps lead the dead back to their loved ones during Día de los Muertos when the dead come back to visit and celebrate with the living. Cempasuchil are known as the flower of the dead. And are essential on any ofrenda — or altar. Their overpowering, musky scent helps the souls of loved ones find their way home.

Art Hounds: Art that explores the sea, prairie and spiritual realms
“Frontera Liminal” at the Anderson Center in Red Wing pairs the work of two Latino artists exploring where the spiritual and the everyday collide. At Westminster Gallery in Minneapolis, Susan Sperl’s detailed felted sea creatures, paired with comics by two teen artists, connect the health of the Mississippi watershed with the health of ocean life. Dodie Logue’s abstract paintings evoke the color and texture of the summer prairie in Buffalo, Minn.

 
What else we're watching:
Crime, abortion at center of Minnesota attorney general’s race. The race for attorney general between incumbent DFLer Keith Ellison and Republican Jim Schultz is expected to be one of the tightest in the state according to recent polls. And candidates are trying to find an edge with 26 days left before Election Day.

K-12 schools in Minnesota hold mock elections to teach kids how to vote. Students Voting is a mock election statewide program that takes place at Minnesota K-12 schools where students are able to go through the entire election process, giving them the actual voters’ experience.

Millions of Americans are losing access to maternal care. A report from the nonprofit March of Dimes finds that 36 percent of counties in the U.S. are "maternity care deserts," meaning they have no obstetric hospitals or birth centers and no obstetric providers.

A snowy coating up north by Friday? 
It had to happen eventually. Forecast models on Wednesday suggest a coating of snow is possible across much of northern Minnesota by Friday. Temperatures in the 20s and 30s Friday morning will supply the cold air for possible snow.
