A Christmas Carol with a dark musical twist

Got a penchant for the peculiar? Enjoy bawdiness, black humour, and a good old-fashioned spectacle? Then you need to know about The Tiger Lillies' Christmas Carol — an extraordinary musical reimagining of the Dickens classic.

Post-punk pioneers The Tiger Lillies use a potent mix of Weimar cabaret, anarchic opera, and gypsy music to shine a light on the harshness of life on the streets of 19th century London. Expect both darkly funny and incredibly poignant moments, with songs that explore poverty, drug addiction, sex work, and violence (The Muppets Christmas Carol, this ain't).

The Tiger Lillies' Christmas Carol runs 14-30 December at the Southbank Centre. Tickets start at £18 for adults and £13.50 for concessions — get yours via the big blue button and get ready for a Christmas concert like no other.

An Alternative Festive Treat

If you want to get into the Christmas spirit but balk at the more saccharine aspects of the season, this is the show for you. The production is suitable for ages 14+, so you can even bring along teens who have outgrown panto but still appreciate a festive outing.

In The Spirit Of Dickens

Although A Christmas Carol is remembered as a heart-warming Christmas tale, it's also a story about poverty. As The Tiger Lillies founder Martin Jacques notes, Dickens felt duty-bound to underscore the huge "inequality of wealth " in 19th century London in his work, and the social issues that arise under such conditions are laid bare in this dark, yet deeply witty, new adaptation.

By An Award-Winning Trio

Part Grand Guignol, part seedy vaudeville, part grunge cabaret, The Tiger Lillies have been wowing audiences since 1989. Previous concerts by this Grammy-nominated band include Edgar Allan Poe’s Haunted Palace and the Olivier Award-winning
Shockheaded Peter.
