| Ethical consumption: Should we change how we eat? Monday 16 March, 7pm–8.30pm Conway Hall, London If the bushfires in Australia and frequent flooding here in the UK tell us anything, it’s that individual crises on opposite sides of the world are interconnected. When it comes to renewable energy, recycling and flying less frequently, we are all aware of our personal and collective impact on the environment - but what about our diets? Roughly one fifth of the UK’s fresh food imports come from areas threatened with climate chaos, sourced under circumstances which are directly driving deforestation, drought and wealth inequality - not to mention long airmiles with huge carbon emissions. A report has shown that reducing our meat and dairy consumption will have a significantly positive impact on the environment, but is it really as simple as that? Our panel of speakers, including Councillor Asher Craig, deputy mayor of Bristol City Council; Guardian columnist and eco-chef Tom Hunt; Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University; and Carolyn Steel, author of Sitopia: How Food Can Save the World; will be discussing the issues we face on the environmental impact of our food consumption and production. | |
