Good morning. Which national pavilion at the Venice Biennale transports us to a solemn cathedral? Which veers dangerously into “luxury retail display aesthetics”? The contemporary art extravaganza has a whopping 87 national presentations this year, and let’s face it, not all of them are worth the long, gelato-melting walk across (and beyond) the Giardini. Fear not: Hyperallergic Editor-in-Chief Hrag Vartanian and critic AX Mina bring us their incisive takes on the pavilions that rose to the occasion — and those that fell short.

In the news, activist groups renew calls to boycott the art magazine Artforum amid rumors about an upcoming “Palestine-themed” issue.

There’s much more, including a comics review of an exhibition at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site that engages Indigenous perspectives of the Hudson River Valley, often left out of big-picture art history despite ancestral claims to the land.
