BoldBrush Recommends: Gwendolyn BallantyneBiographyGwendolyn Ballantyne is a fine artist based in Los Angeles. Her work explores the unexpected mystery and beauty found in everyday life. She is drawn to contemporary realism, but draws on bold color, dramatic lighting and sumptuous brushwork. Ensorcelled by her environment, Gwendolyn's eclectic and diverse subjects reflect her love of history, culture, mythology and visual storytelling. Gwendolyn received a BFA in fine art, and another in anthropology at UC Santa Cruz. She went on to earn an MFA in production design from CalArts, which led her to her award-winning career designing for the entertainment industry. Over the last 28 years she has worked as an art director, concept designer, painter, sculptor and illustrator on large-scale projects around the world. Some of her favorite projects have included Journey to the Center of the Earth at Tokyo Disneysea, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, World Expo Dubai 2020, NatureQuest at the Fernbank Museum in Atlanta, and the upcoming Universal's Epic Universe. She has worked as a Walt Disney Imagineer, for Universal Studios, Warner Bros., Mycotoo, Thinkwell, BRC, The Hettema Group, Novalogic game company, and her clients have included Henson Studios, Cirque Du Soleil, Lionsgate, HBO, and many more. Artist Statement I have always been interested in telling stories with my artwork. As I create, I love to reveal the mystery in a subject, whether through composition, the ambiguity of a facial expression or pose, or the interplay of dark and light - in both the actual ambiance of a piece, or even in a more metaphoric, emotional sense. Everywhere I look I see a bit of magic in the mundane, whether it is a pile of books and interesting keepsakes, a person you thought you knew but want to see deeper beneath the surface, or a place you've often passed by and not noticed before. Painting helps me to unravel the mysteries in life and discover the hidden stories waiting to be told all around us.
