Gymnastics goes big in PMAC

From the very first routine Friday night in the PMAC, LSU gymnastics coach Jay Clark knew his Tigers were going to have a good night against Missouri.

KJ Johnson, who hadn't competed since Jan. 3 because of a sprained ankle, flew down the vault runway, flipped over the table and stuck the landing. She only scored a 9.90 (we could fill a couple of newsletters about gymnastics scoring this season), but it set a tone for No. 3 LSU. The Tigers went on to run away from the No. 9 Missouri Tigers, closing out the month with their best score of 2025 in a 198.000-197.175 victory.

We've also got a photo gallery from the meet by our own Michael Johnson.

We're now two weeks away from LSU baseball's Feb. 14 season opener, and there are a lot of new faces that will play big roles this season. One of them is transfer outfielder Chris Stanfield from Auburn, who Koki Riley said came to LSU to develop in the Michael Braswell mode.

We're in the middle of five straight nights of competition at the PMAC running through Sunday's women's game with Mississippi State. Saturday the LSU men take the court again, hosting Texas at 5 p.m. It's hard to say this is desperate, must win time for the Tigers, but I suppose when you're 1-6 in conference any game is a must win. Anyway, it's on the SEC Network.

Like KJ Johnson, Mikaylah Williams set an early tone by draining her first jump shot Thursday against Oklahoma. It was just the start of a season-high 37 point effort full of big shots, as the talented junior led the Tigers to a dramatic 107-100 victory over Oklahoma. The Tigers are back in action at home at 1 p.m. Sunday on the SEC Network.

Flau'jae Johnson opened up in a recent interview about the controversial playing of one of her late father's rap songs after LSU's recent game at South Carolina, something the school has since apologized for. Meanwhile, former LSU star Angel Reese will return to the PMAC for an exhibition game with her WNBA team later this year. Our Reed Darcey has all the details.

Thanks as always for reading and subscribing to the most comprehensive LSU coverage around.

Enjoy your sports weekend, everyone.
