Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Maggie Haberman

During a Wednesday morning appearance on CNN’s New Day, Maggie Haberman reported that former President Donald Trump is putting pressure on conservative writers to legitimize his baseless “stolen election” narrative.

Haberman’s appearance comes a day after she reported that Trump was telling people that he expects to be reinstated as President in August, which John Berman described as “madness."

That major Tuesday story expanded on Wednesday when Haberman added additional reporting that Trump is pressuring conservative writers to legitimize his stolen election narrative, or, as she said, he is “trying to flush into the conservative media ecosystem” to give weight to the baseless stolen election lie.

Drawing a parallel to when Trump tried to encourage public pressure to fire his then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Haberman said that Trump is trying to get conservative writers to go public—in a more mainstream way—to promote the idea that this election was stolen from him, “to try to legitimize it, to try to get people to call attention to it.”

She also dismissed objections from Biden supporters who “don’t want to hear anything about Donald Trump."

“Why people are attacking me for reporting the news, it’s, this has always been a bit of a mystery,” she said.

The criticism of Haberman is mysterious, because the reporting has been important, newsworthy, and excellent.

MEDIA LOSER:
From the Desk of…

The “From the Desk of…” portion of former President Donald Trump's website has been deleted just 29 days after its majorly promoted launch, senior spokesman Jason Miller confirmed Wednesday morning.

The section of the site was launched on May 4 and promoted as a new platform for Trump to share messages with his followers after being widely de-platformed from nearly all social media outlets following the insurrection of January 6. Links to the former section now just forward to an “alerts” page that features a sign-up for “Exclusive updates from Donald J. Trump.”

The reviews of the new communication effort were mixed, leaning toward mockery of the tech that was teased before launch as a game-changing platform, but amounted to basic blogging technology that's been around for most of this century.

That basic blog is gone now, and not coming back, according to Miller. "“It was just auxiliary to the broader efforts we have and are working on,” he told CNBC.

The mockery followed swiftly once more. "Trump cancels himself," is just one example of some of the extremely on-point commentary. And it is very part of the point.

Bookended by derision, the brief life of the basic blog cum "game-changing" communications platform was an attention-grabber, of sorts. But in none of the ways Trump hoped and expected. Which is certainly the real reason behind its quick demise.

The A-Block

Debate Threat

On Tuesday, Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel fired off a missive to the Commission on Presidential Debates, demanding changes to the way the organization operates. Failure to do so, she said, will result in the RNC advising future Republican nominees not to participate in general election debates.

“The Republican Party needs assurances that the CPD will make meaningful reforms to the debate process by working with stakeholders to restore the faith and legitimacy it has lost,” the statement said. “If not, as RNC Chairman, I will have no choice but to advise future Republican candidates against participating in CPD-hosted debates.”

McDaniel’s letter cited several perceived problems with the way the CPD conducted last year’s debates. Her beefs include, among other complaints, the fact that the first debate was held after early voting had started in several states, the ideological makeup of the commission’s board members, and the CPD’s selection of C-SPAN’s Steve Scully as moderator for the second debate. Scully briefly worked as an intern for Joe Biden in the late 1970s.

The second 2020 presidential debate, to be held in Miami, FL, was canceled. About two weeks before it was to take place, the White House announced that Trump had contracted Covid-19, after which Trump was hospitalized. In response, the CPD announced that the second debate would be held virtually. This, however, was a nonstarter for Trump, who withdrew from the event.

McDaniel’s letter also complained about the pandemic plexiglass affixed to the lecterns just before the second (and what was to be the third) debate...

‘All Signs Point to a Likely Indictment’

ABC News chief legal analyst and Mediaite founder Dan Abrams told the co-hosts of The View on Tuesday that when it comes to the criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump’s business practices, “all signs” suggest that an indictment is likely.

“Those of us in news media always want to try to be careful, about what might happen when it comes to an indictment, but I’ll tell you this: all signs point to a likely indictment,” Abrams told co-host, Sara Haines.

“You don’t get a grand jury like this unless they believe they have evidence of a crime..."
