We hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend! In recognition of Indigenous Peoples' Day, we wanted to share the work above by Zig Jackson, an artist of Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara descent. It's currently on view in our special exhibition Devour the Land: War and American Landscape Photography since 1970, so come see it when we reopen tomorrow (don't forget to reserve your advance ticket!). You can hear more about the photographer's work in his own words in two videos (one is long, the other is short) produced by the Portland Art Museum.

From Our Friends...

This winter, Dumbarton Oaks will be hosting a Wintersession course focusing on cultural philanthropy. Held from January 10-14, participating students are invited to Washington, D.C., where they will visit The Kreeger Museum, Glenstone, and the National Museum of American History, and engage in conversations with leaders in cultural philanthropy. Join the Harvard Dance Center, in partnership with Harvard Common Spaces, for a screening of the dance film for Initiation– In Love Solidarity, a new work by Harvard Dance Center Fall '21 Artist-in-Residence Nailah Randall-Bellinger. The Department of History of Art + Architecture invites you to join a virtual conversation with the co-curators of a forthcoming Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition featuring Juan de Pareja, a 17th-century Afro-Hispanic painter born into slavery. Check here for more info and to register. 

Danish artist Jens Haaning recently submitted two blank canvases to the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in exchange for $84,000. Entitled Take the Money and Run, Haaning describes the work as a commentary on poor wages and unfair working conditions. Read more about the artist's message here.
