Will Lewis and Max keep it clean?
Lewis Hamilton is quite right when he says he’s never won any of his seven Formula 1 world titles in a so-called Senna/Prost-style manner – and that’s to his immense credit. The denouement of both the 1989 and ’90 title battles between Ayrton and Alain were unsavory to say the least and Lewis says he’s “here to win in the right way”. I don’t doubt his sentiments. That said, however, his conduct in the 2016 title decider in Abu Dhabi wasn’t perfect – as he deliberately slowed his pace as leader (defying orders from the Mercedes pitwall) in a vain attempt to drop teammate Nico Rosberg into the pack and lose the podium finish that Nico required. Against the backdrop of the Silverstone and Monza clashes between himself and Max Verstappen, there is something of a tinderbox waiting for the next spark to ignite. And the last time F1 raced in Mexico, they clashed at Turn 2… Sunday’s race is a must-watch as their epic duel enters its endgame. By: Charles Bradley, Global Editor in Chief Motorsport.com |
