Hardly a surprise that Lewis Hamilton has re-signed to chase a record-breaking eighth Formula 1 World Championship in 2021 with Mercedes, but the duration of the contract – one year – does raise an eyebrow. From one side, as his boss Toto Wolff says, the public health crisis has made the world a pretty volatile place right now. And with a huge rules reset coming in for 2022, it’s in everyone’s interest to keep their options open. And as for all the talk about a veto on his teammate… Lewis has never cared about who he’s up against. In fact, Toto probably cares far more – after overseeing the Hamilton/Rosberg meltdown – so if there is to be upheaval for 2022, it’s likely to be on his terms rather than anyone else’s.
