Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Sean Hannity

In the cable news ratings battle for viewers at 9 p.m. Monday, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow topped CNN’s Chris Cuomo in the key demographic of viewers age 25-54, but neither reached the heights of Fox News’ Sean Hannity, who notched significantly more adult viewers than the competition.

Hannity won the time slot with 2.82 million viewers total, and 455,000 in the demo, according to data from Nielsen. The Rachel Maddow Show was second, with 2.47 million total viewers, and 316,000 in the demo. Cuomo Prime Time was third at 9 p.m., with 1.23 million total viewers – the only CNN show Monday that got more than one million viewers – and 298,000 in the demo.

As is usually the case, Fox News dominated in ratings across the board, with four out of the five most-watched shows in total viewers, and all five of the most-watched shows in the key demo. Tucker Carlson Tonight was first, with 3.13 million total viewers and 535,000 viewers in the demo.

In total day viewership, Fox was first, with 1.58 million total viewers, 269,000 in the demo. MSNBC was second in total viewers, with 1.09 million, and third in the demo, with 127,000. CNN was third in total viewers, with 728,000, second in the demo with 191,000.

Singling out Hannity, he not only stayed up top in his spot, but on Tuesday night he used that big platform to back the vaccine. Unlike another top Fox prime time host.

In the war for second place, MSNBC continues to routinely edge out CNN, and Maddow whupping Cuomo is a big part of that. But that's second place. For the top spot, it's Fox News. Again and still.

MEDIA LOSER:
Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres is ending her talk show after 19 seasons, citing a “need to be challenged.”

The news comes after DeGeneres faced a steep decline in ratings this year, losing more than a million viewers following accusations of a toxic workplace.

Despite the timing of the cancellation, DeGeneres told The Hollywood Reporter that it has “been the plan all along” to sign off after Season 19.

“I was going to stop after season 16,” she said. “So, we [settled] on three more years and I knew that would be my last. That’s been the plan all along. And everybody kept saying, even when I signed, “You know, that’s going to be 19, don’t you want to just go to 20? It’s a good number.’ So is 19.”

While THR confirmed the news with an exclusive interview with DeGeneres, The Daily Mail first revealed that the show was ending after speaking to an anonymous source.

“The ratings have tanked and have been truly appalling this year and Ellen knows her time is up,” said the source. “The show has bled viewers since the toxic environment around Ellen and her show was made public.”

Social media reacted to the news with several trending topics focusing on bashing DeGeneres.

The comedian and talk host says she has her own reasons, but it's hard to put a positive spin on something that is being widely treated as a rebuke.

NBC's Savannah Guthrie will sit down with Ellen tomorrow for an exclusive in-depth interview on the situation. That, at least, should have good ratings.

The A-Block

Cheney Ousted, Cheney Defiant

Even after her Republican House colleagues voted to throw her out of her conference leadership role, Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) remained defiant in her first interview after it happened.

Cheney was voted out on Wednesday morning in a voice vote. She was also booed by her colleagues. Undeterred, she renewed her declaration of war on Donald Trump, saying she's going to make sure he never gets near the Oval Office again.

For his part, Trump put out a statement gloating and calling her names the way any normal adult public figure would do.

Rep. Ken Buck, a member of the Freedom Caucus, spoke in her defense. On the other side, Lara Trump defended the ouster and continued to push election conspiracy theories on Fox & Friends.

On The View, Cheney was compared to Joan of Arc.

The congresswoman spoke to NBC’s Savannah Guthrie afterward. Guthrie asked her what all the media wanted to ask: “Are you the leader of the opposition in exile right now in the Republican Party?”

“I intend to be one of the leaders in a fight to restore our party to bring our party back to substance and principles, and in a fight to make clear that we won’t participate in the really dangerous effort that’s underway,” Cheney said.

Cheney went on by saying her ouster was “the opening salvo” in the battle for the soul of the Republican Party. Guthrie then asked what’s Cheney’s message as Trump’s political team is working to coalesce around a candidate to challenge her in Wyoming’s next primary election.

Cheney’s answer? “Bring it on!”

Facts Running Rampant

CNN’s Daniel Dale spoke out against a Republican bill that would require fact-checkers to register and post a $1 million bond, or face fines that could quickly bankrupt them.

New Day co-host Brianna Keilar asked Dale about Michigan’s proposed “Fact Checker Registration Act” Wednesday morning, and Dale was ... not exactly a fan.
