For many of you, today is the culmination of months of work. Before you dive back in and start planning for graduation and orientation, feel free to check out the data released by the National Resident Matching Program and let me know of any trends you see. Match Day results

A record number of medical school students and graduates applied for residency positions this year, according to the National Resident Matching Program. Nearly 36,000 applicants competed for 31,757 positions. The number of first-year positions also hit a new record of 28,849.
 

New RPA Subscribers-Only Content: Best practices for coordinators' clinical competency committee duties

The adoption of the ACGME’s Next Accreditation System introduced the concept of Milestones to help residency programs track the developmental steps achieved by its trainees. Along with that, programs are required to have a clinical competency committee to review and evaluate residents, as well as report Milestone data to the ACGME. Read more.
 

Overuse of medical jargon a barrier to communication with patients

Since only 12% of U.S. adults are considered to be highly proficient in health literacy—the ability to find, understand, and use health information—physicians should not assume patients understand what they’re being told.
 

New resident orientation

After Match Day coordinators communicate with residents before they begin training. The organization, clarity, and thoroughness of the packet of information and instructions that you send to incoming residents indicate how you manage the program.

If you’re a seasoned residency program coordinator looking to advance your career, come attend this two-day intensive course that combines instructor-led presentation, class interaction, and hands-on learning. Topic covered include ACGME requirements, mentoring newer coordinators, interacting with program directors, and involvement in scholarly activities.

If you’re not yet ready for our advanced course, we still offer our Residency Program Coordinator Boot Camp. It offers a great foundation for both allopathic and osteopathic program coordinators. And if you’re unable to travel to one of our boot camp sites, we offer an online version.
