Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt - Procedure 219
Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a percutaneous procedure used to treat cirrhosis, a severe liver disease commonly caused by hepatitis or alcohol abuse. Cirrhosis produces scar tissue that blocks the flow of blood passing through the liver from the portal vein, which carries blood from the intestines to the liver, to the hepatic veins, which carry blood from the liver back to the heart.
