Someone Gave Us A Forest!
Dear John,

It feels like a miracle! The photo above (taken overlooking our former Meadow Building parking lot) includes just part of a staggering in-kind contribution to Harbin from an anonymous donor, estimated to be worth near $500,000. This blessed gift of shade, grace, clean air, erosion control, and wildlife habitat includes 140 hardy trees of a variety of species, most of them approaching maturity and as large as 30’ tall. It’s too soon to say exactly where each tree will go; but wherever it is will instantly be more beautiful. We are humbled by the generosity and magnitude here, and inspired to have such a significant boon to the so-important project of bringing big trees back to Harbin.

And there’s more news, because we’ve also received an anonymous gift of mature trees from a Middletown-area business owner: four spectacular olive trees that are each 100 years old! They are fat and gnarled, and we’ve already installed one old fellow in the garden to watch over our Health Services trailer, and three wizened sisters together on the plateau by the labyrinth. Amazing in-kind gifts like these, and the nearly $200,000 donated already by guests and friends of Harbin, are making a truly significant difference in helping us to recover from near-total devastation, and to recreate Harbin beautifully anew.

We kneel in gratitude to you all.

In this edition of our newsletter: browse photos of our new big trees, and more; find out how to sponsor an artful Harbin sitting bench, immortalized for posterity; pray with us as we enter the final round of consideration for a major CalFire grant; read our current, complete rebuilding news; meet some beloved Harbin artisans whose work is flavoring our rebuild; enjoy a springtime drone tour of Harbin from above; and finally, learn the latest about our estimated reopening.
Perhaps You’d Like To Sponsor a Bench?

If you are considering a larger financial gift to Harbin, we’d like to offer you encouragement to make your gift now: sponsorship of a beautiful, comfortable, locally-hand-crafted redwood sitting bench, individualized with a commemorative, steel, fig-leaf plaque, made by our favorite Harbin metalworker and engraved with your name (or whosever you choose). You’ll not only be supporting Harbin’s rebuild and reforestation, you’ll be adding artistry to our new landscape, and providing comfort and respite to Harbin guests for years to come. Pray For The Ducks (and Water & Trees)

One of the realities of Harbin’s rebuild is that costs are escalating: even the entirety of Harbin’s financial reserves will not be enough for us to replace what was lost. So to help us meet our growing costs, we’ve been actively fundraising and pursuing grant opportunities. One pending opportunity is a $450,000 CalFire grant to support air and watershed health through wetland restoration and the removal of dead trees. Thanks to the successful work we’ve already done restoring Harbin’s land and water, and the strength of the plan we submitted to Calfire, we are now among the handful of final applicants being considered for this major support. This is great news – and we ask that you please join us in holding the vision of Harbin soon being awarded this very significant CalFire grant.

Artists At Work

One of Harbin’s outstanding features has long been the unique artistry of its facilities – artistry that represents the combined work of many talented individuals. As the bulldozers and cement trucks complete their part of our Phase 1 rebuild and we come closer to reopening, now it’s time for our artisans to bring back the warmth, detail, and love. So Much Accomplished – And Still More To Go...

Click on the photo above for a special aerial meditation: a drone tour of Harbin’s pools and land, taken early this spring. Since then, we’ve made even more progress on our pool area, temporary buildings, and landscape. We’ve also begun preparing our new, on-line reservations software (much more about that in upcoming newsletters). And we’ve begun interviewing returning staff and new applicants for the reception, food service, bodywork, landscaping, maintenance, and security positions for which people need to be hired and trained before we can reopen.

And when will reopening be? We still cannot say for sure. If everything goes perfectly, the earliest possible opening date is currently the very end of August. But so much is still beyond our control – and that date is still subject to significant postponement. Please know that all of us continue to work with passion, dedication, and love to bring you the best possible Harbin Hot Springs... as soon as that can possibly be.
