Strategy. Focus. Accountability. Dear John, This past week I celebrated the 30th anniversary of my entry into the word of earned income. August 17, 1989 I walked through the doors of a Marriott Hotel in New York and took on my first "real job." I worked 40+ hours per week carrying bags and living on tips. Within a year I was promoted into management and a 50 hour work week was mandatory (the norm was way more than the mandate). Now 30 years later, I do what I want, when I want, but I find myself working even harder. The work is more rewarding, it enables me to afford a comfortable lifestyle, and I am in control. There are three things that have served as a catalyst for my success over the years. They are the same three things you need to jump-start your growth (personal and professional). Strategy The first is strategy - or you could just call it a plan. Each day I work toward a goal. I'm focused on it and I'm relentless in pursuit of it. That's what makes my hard work productive. If you show up to an office each day without a plan, or even a "reason why," you're never going to feel productive. Even worse, if you show up and work hard toward a goal that was unrealistic and you don't realize it until you've put in some time (days, weeks, months or years) you end up with a mid-life crisis. This is perhaps the biggest gift I give to my clients, a glimpse at their future with fresh eyes. I objectively evaluate my client's talent and keep him driving toward attainable goals - both long and short term. Focus There are thousands of distractions in the world these days. The fools gold known as social media has a unique ability to derail smart people and keep them from working in a more productive way. Each day a new vendor walks through the door promising my clients a pill that will make them thin, smart, and rich. I keep you from spending hundreds of hours on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. I pump your stomach and save your wallet when you swallow the pill or the snake oil sold by the latest charlatan to pull up to your door in a Mercedes or appear in your Inbox. Accountability These days I'm fat (again) and I want to change that. During the past two weeks I've gone to sleep in my workout clothes with my running shoes next to my bed. My kids leave for school at 6:30AM and at 6:35 I begin my slow (very slow) jog to the gym. At the gym a trainer greets me and logs me into a computer program. I only work out with him one day per week but I check-in with him every day when I arrive. He's there every day. If I don't show up, only two people in the world know it. And that's one person more than I had invested in my success three weeks ago. I am invested in my clients' success. I hold them accountable for their actions. When they don't show up or when they do something stupid, I provide the support to get them back on track. I am the caring, nurturing big brother who sticks with you even when you don't listen. I advise, encourage and mentor. When necessary, I smack you around. But you screw up less and succeed more because there is an additional person invested in your success. Hard work is not enough. If you think it is time for you to obtain the success you deserve, schedule an appointment with me to discuss it. Don't wait until the New Year. The next four months are going to fly by. You can control your future or you can be controlled by it.
