AT&T hits roadblocks installing underground fiber optic internet lines
By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editor MORE DIGITS TO DIAL: Changes are coming soon for the 504 area code in the New Orleans area, and they will mean more dialing. Starting Sunday, even persons with 504 numbers must dial 504 then the phone number to make a local call. They might even have to dial 1 before the area code in some cases, according to the Federal Communications Commission. HARDENING THE GRID: In the aftermath of Hurricane Ida's lengthy power outages, boil water advisories and internet blackouts, one common refrain from Jefferson Parish leaders was the desire to "harden the grid," to make it less susceptible to catastrophic events. Sounds simple enough, but it's not that easy, at least when it comes to installing underground fiber optic internet lines. DEADLY NIGHT: Two people were shot dead Wednesday night in New Orleans, one of them on Interstate 10. The killings were reported on I-10 near Chef Menteur Highway and in the 1100 block of Pauline Street in the St. Claude neighborhood. Thanks for starting your day with us.
