We called him Harley. My wife picked the name because she said that when he purred, it sounded like a Harley-Davidson motorbike idling.

It was a cold morning in spring when he adopted us. Tracy had left an upstairs window open to allow a gust or two of fresh spring air to circulate through the house. Even though we lived in the inner metropolitan area of London, which, in those days, was known for its thick pea-soup smog, we were largely immune from the pollution as we lived up on the high ground of Hampstead where fresh air survived.
