Good morning from Brussels

Just a few days before the US elections (5 November), European capitals are cautiously awaiting the results of an election in which they have no say, but that will undoubtedly have a decisive influence on the future of the old continent.

Euractiv’s network and Charles Szumski have gathered the reactions of national leaders, officials, and experts to map out the expectations and anxieties of European capitals in the event of a victory for Republican candidate Donald Trump or Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

The outcome of the US elections will also be crucial for Europe’s eastern Mediterranean, a highly sensitive region considered key for the West’s foreign policy objectives in the Middle East and, to some extent, in Ukraine. Read here how the new administration could affect the balances of the “Athens-Nicosia-Ankara” triangle.

Meanwhile, analysts told Thomas Moller-Nielsen that EU leaders must contend with the economic fallout of growing US protectionism regardless of who wins next week’s presidential elections.
