Things We Saw Today: The Dancing Robots Are All Fun and Games Until They Murder Us

Boston Dynamics dancing robots

Because I've spent a life steeped in science fiction, the latest "fun" video out of robotics company Boston Dynamics scares the hell out of me.

Pretty Much Everything Movies Have Told You About Corsets Is Wrong

Series and films like Bridgerton look pretty, but the way they portray corsets in their costuming and scripts isn't accurate.

Do Better Challenges You to Dive Into The Heavy Shadow Work of Dismantling White Supremacy

It is not a magic end all be all solution to end white supremacy forever, but it does a pretty good job in helping people find a great place to start the necessary work.

I Am Excited About the News of New Kingsman Movies, Actually

Taron Egerton in Kingsman- The Golden Circle (2017)

Whatever ends up happening, I'm actually really excited about it. I, unintentionally, owe a lot to the Kingsman franchise and after rewatching them, I'm proud that I get to work here all because I love watching a bunch of dudes saying "manners maketh man" and using whips.

I Thought We’d Moved Past Every Movie Led by a Woman Being a Referendum on the Very Concept

Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

The discussion wasn’t about the fact that WW84's protagonist was a woman or that it was directed by one; it was about a movie that had highlights and flaws and questions raised that just happened to have women at its forefront. Until it wasn’t.

Some Things Did Bring Me Joy in 2020

2020 joy

I'm not acting like 2020 was easy for anyone. It was far from it. But looking back on what brought us a little joy is maybe good for us all.

10 Best (Western) Animated Shows of 2020

Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Grace in Infinity Train Book 3

Films may not have gotten to properly shine this year, but animated series thrived both in terms of anime and Western Animation. Considering that our own Briana Lawrence has been covering a lot on the anime side of things, I wanted to give some love to the Western Animated series I felt killed it this year. No particular order, but I stand by my top two.

I’m Sorry I Can’t Even Enjoy Barbara Minerva’s Obvious Girl Crush on Diana Prince in WW84 Because Barbara Deserves Better

Barbara faces off against Wonder Woman

When they meet again at the White House I'm not surprised that Barbara isn't willing to listen, and it's not just because she wants to keep her wish, it's because... why would she listen to Diana after everything that's happened between them up to this point? Not to mention that, as Barbara points out, Diana's criticizing her for not renouncing her wish but she's not holding herself accountable. At all.

People Actually Had the Motivation to Cosplay in 2020 and That’s One of the Best Things About This Cursed Year

Cosplay banner of NoireCi, Black Bettie Cosplay, Charanne Loves, and DeLa Doll

Cosplayers have been reminding me about the fun aspect of cosplay and how it was absolutely ok to be having fun, something I'd told myself to not indulge in because I was too busy panicking about, checks notes, a pandemic, racial injustice, and how to stay financially afloat when your main work gig no longer exists. Cosplayers have unintentionally become a part of my self-care routine of 2020.

To All the Female-Led Comic Book Movies I Haven’t Loved Before

Helen Slater as Supergirl in 1984 movie

Wonder Woman 1984 may not have been great to me and many of my colleagues, but you know what? The biggest issue is that it is part of a genre that has lately leaned heavily on spectacle, the talent of the cast, and the cult of personality that has arisen around it. Without it, there is only a lot of noise. So maybe that should be examined for the future of all comic book movies, female-led and otherwise.

Stephanie Meyer’s Original Casting Choices Would Have Made a Very Different Twilight Saga

Robert Pattinson and Henry Cavill

Thank you to Robert Pattinson for hating your character. Thank you to Kristen Stewart for thinking this was nonsense. Thank you for making Twilight the film series that it is because honestly, it still brings me so much absurd joy.
