Pahinui Productions Good News & Updates |
Welcome to our November newsletter! As the Season of Holidays is upon us, we once again find ourselves reflecting on the past year and on those who have helped to shape our lives in so many significant ways. We value our relationships with you all and are thrilled to share our heartfelt thanks for your aloha and support!
In the Hawaiian calendar, November holds a special significance, as it marks the traditional period of resting and feasting and marks the closing of the year and the dawning of the New Year on November 17th at aprox. 6:00pm / also the moment of Cyril's passing. When Makali'i, the constellation Pleiades rises it is first visible just below us at Keei and falls in sync with the setting of the sun in the west. This positioning of celestial bodies marks the beginning of the Hawaiian New Year and the Makahiki season honoring the earth and the heavens that gives us so much to be grateful for. ~ Hau'oli Makahiki Hou! May your find happiness in the New Year. |
November, also holds a special significance as it marks the close of our event year with Cyril’s Seattle Slack Key Festival. Now presented by Mitch Chang and KalaKoa Entertainment. Mahalo to all of you who come out and a special mahalo to all of our musicians who have joined us for this annual journey and celebration.
Kala Koa Entertainment celebrates 16 years of bringing the biggest and brightest names in Hawaiian music to the Seattle Slack Key Festival, returning to Town Hall Seattle on Sunday, November 10, 2024, taking fans on a Hawaiian musical journey showcasing GRAMMY-winning and Na Hoku Hanohano (Hawaiian Grammy) award-winning Hawaiian kiho’alu guitarists, along with vocal and hula performances.
Slack Key guitar a Hawaiian fingerstyle guitar technique that originated in the 19th century when European sailors and Latin American cattlemen brought guitars to Hawai'i which Hawaiians adapted to their traditional songs, developing a plethora of open major key tunings by "slacking" the strings (the term "slack key" comes from the Hawaiian phrase kī hōʻalu, which means "loosen the [tuning] key").
The resulting lush, resonant, open sound is instantly identifiable as Hawaiian and guaranteed to transport the listener back to the islands. Click here to listen & learn more
Festival founder, Cyril Pahinui (1950-2018) the son of musical legend Gabby Pahinui, and was, in his own right, one of Hawai‘i’s most gifted guitarists and singers. Cyril performed twice at Carnegie Hall, contributed to three Grammy Award-winning albums, received several Hoku Hanohano Awards, and recorded on more than 35 Hawaiian musical releases.

THE 2024 SKYLARK AWARD WAS PRESENTED TO:
Billy V William "Billy V" Van Osdol was born and raised in Long Beach, California and moved to Kailua-Kona on Hawai‘i Island at age 7. It was there, as a sixth-grader at Kealakehe Elementary School, that he discovered radio. During his sophomore year, he helped the senior class contact Honolulu radio personality Dave Lancaster to emcee their senior ball. In Billy's senior year, he visited Dave Lancaster in the KKUA studios and watched him work as a DJ. Billy V was hooked. After graduating from Konawaena High School in 1983, Billy V got hired at KKON AM 790, starting off on the weekends and making his way up to news director. But he wanted to do more and decided to move to Honolulu in 1986. Programming with Honolulu Skylark, he assisted in building studios and production rooms, implemented on-air programs, and worked with initial sales teams before being called to assist Hawaiian 105 KINE-FM. One month later, Skylark moved to KORL, and Billy V followed, working as her news director. He then moved to Krater 96, and then on May 14, 1990, was part of the original crew to launch KCCN FM 100, working the afternoon show called Billy V. and the Pau Hana Posse. In 2006, he was moved to mornings on Hawaiian 105 KINE. He was featured on Audio Shows on all Hawaiian Airlines Transpacific flight and more. Billy V is a veteran expert emcee who has been at the forefront of numerous events in the entertainment, hospitality, and sports industries; most of Hawai‘i’s biggest events including Merrie Monarch, Miss Hawai‘i pageant and Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, cultural and political gatherings, A-list conventions and concerts including the annual Waimanalo Kanikapila. “I think the Kona coffee has a richer flavor than any other, be it grown where it may and call it by what name you please.” ~Mark Twain in Letter’s from Hawai‘i Nahenahe Farm is located in Middle Ke‘ei, within the ahupua’a, or traditional land division encompassing the coastal and mountain resources, of Kealakekua, a major agricultural zone, known as ‘āpa‘a. One of the most beautiful, culturally and historically significant locations in all the Hawaiian Islands, Kealakekua translated as “the path of the gods,” is also one of the most productive. One of the earliest accounts of the Kona Field System was documented in the 1792 journals of Archibald Menzies, a surgeon and a naturalist who traveled to Hawai‘i with Captain George Vancouver. The first coffee was planted in Kona in 1828 by Reverend Samuel Ruggles, an American Protestant missionary who had originally come to the Islands with the First Company of American missionaries. And today, the area known as the Kona Coffee Belt sustains over 700 hundred independently owned coffee farms, most of them family owned and operated are less than five acres in size. Optimal growing conditions on the slopes of Mauna Loa provides the coffee plants with plentiful rainfall and moderate temperatures, giving them their unique flavor. Though the elevations of Kona coffee farms are lower than the elevations of some of the world's top Arabica coffees, when it comes to coffee bean quality a bigger factor than elevation is how fast the coffee cherry (fruit) mature on the coffee plant, and the Kona region's growing conditions provide for a long maturation period. |

Our coffee a premium gourmet Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica var. typica) is 100% Kona grown and pesticide free. At Nahenahe Farm we hand select and pick only the ripe cherries to ensure that only those at the peak ripeness are chosen. We then add our own personal touch during the small batch roasting process, focusing on bringing out the inherent fruitiness in a coffee while showcasing its natural sweetness. Our coffee is known for its simple yet rich flavor, well-balanced with a medium body, a complex aroma, bright acidity yet classically balanced taste. Often exhibiting spicy and also buttery qualities with subtle winey tones, intensely aromatic, and with a great aftertaste/finish.

Nahenahe Farm was the dream of my late husband, Cyril Pahinui who was not only a master of Kī Hō'alu but also an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher. One of our mutual passions is supporting Hawaiian music and passing on the Slack Key tradition.
Here at Nahenahe Farm we work alongside Na'alehu Theatre, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization to gather resources for archiving music collections, event production, and providing Hawaiian Music Mentorship.
To support this effort we are developing a range of Hawai'i products with 100% of profit going toward bringing Hawaiian Music Masters into local schools to mentor youth in traditional music stylings. Through this work we hope to preserve and perpetuate the art form.
Our first project at the Nahenahe Farm, was the complete renovation of the 'Ohia Cottagea well-appointed 2 bedroom guest house in the heart of Kona's coffee belt that offers visitors a spacious and relaxing place to settle in and enjoy Kona's casual, unassuming island-style.
This unique offering comes with a sampling of our local products, pre-arrival consulting, and can include an assortment of personalized guest services. We hope you will come stay with us on your next adventure to Hawai'i Island. To receive the Friends and Family discount please email me in advance to booking.
COFFEE Now available! We are having an good year at Nahenahe Farm in Kona and our coffee is exceptional! Visit our website to try our 100% Kona Coffee and other Tropical Delights...and treasures.... |
