Pahinui Productions Good News & Updates

Welcome to our November newsletter! As the Season of Holidays is upon us, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year and on those who have helped to shape our lives in most significant ways. We value our relationships with you all and are thrilled to share our heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support!

In the Hawaiian calendar, November holds a special significance, as it marks the traditional period of resting and feasting and marks the closing of the year and the dawning of the new year on November 17th at aprox. 6:00pm / also the moment of Cyril's passing. When Makali'i, the constellation Pleiades rises in the east and falls in sync with the setting of the sun in the west, this positioning of celestial bodies marks the beginning of the Makahiki season honoring the earth and the heavens for giving us so much to be grateful for. ~ Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!

This month, also holds a special significance as it marks the close of our event year with the presentation of Cyril’s Seattle Slack Key Festival. Mahalo to all of you who came out and a special mahalo to all of our musicians who joined us for this annual journey and celebration.

The 2023 ALOHA IS AWARD WAS PRESENTED TO:

Aaron Mahi - A worthy recipient indeed!

Aaron David Mahi, a native Hawaiian, was born on July 9, 1953. From an early age he gravitated to music. At age 14, Aaron was selected as one of only 37 students to receive a Honolulu Symphony Orchestra mentored scholarship. He graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 1971, and from Connecticut's Hartt School of Music in 1975.

Aaron Mahi was the second to the longest conductor of the Royal Hawaiian Band for more than 24 years, between 1981 and 2005. During his tenure he took the band on a historic trip to Europe where they entertained nearly 17,000 people in 19 concerts over 21 days. He also led the band on a tour of the mainland U.S, which was highlighted by an exuberant performance at New York's Carnegie Hall. Followed by a tour of Japan where they commemorated a sister-city relationship with Hiroshima. Under Bandmaster Mahi's baton, the band was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2003, bandmaster Mahi, fluent in English, Hawaiian and German, received the Golden Ring of Honor from the Association of German Musicians and was the recipient of a German "Order of Merit" for his perpetuation of German music in the band. Called the "Bundesverdienstkreuz," he was presented with the award during a ceremony at 'Iolani Palace. Aaron was also the conductor of the Hawai'i Ecumenical Chorale since1980 and the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra from 1988 through 1995. For more than a decade, Aaron played every Sunday evening, at the Marriott Waikiki Hotel, singing traditional Hawaiian songs with George Kuo and Martin Pahinui.

Nahenahe Farm 100% Kona Coffee Now Available at: Nahenahe Farm

“I think the Kona coffee has a richer flavor than any other, be it grown where it may and call it by what name you please.”   ~Mark Twain in Letter’s from Hawai‘i

Nahenahe Farm is located in Middle Ke‘ei, within the ahupua’a, or traditional land division encompassing the coastal and mountain resources, of Kealakekua, a major agricultural zone, known as ‘āpa‘a. One of the most beautiful, culturally and historically significant locations in all the Hawaiian Islands, Kealakekua translated as “the path of the gods,” is also one of the most productive.

One of the earliest accounts of the Kona Field System was documented in the 1792 journals of Archibald Menzies, a surgeon and a naturalist who traveled to Hawai‘i with Captain George Vancouver.

The first coffee was planted in Kona in 1828 by Reverend Samuel Ruggles, an American Protestant missionary who had originally come to the Islands with the First Company of American missionaries. And today, the area known as the Kona Coffee Belt sustains over 700 hundred independently owned coffee farms, most of them family owned and operated are less than five acres in size.

Optimal growing conditions on the slopes of Mauna Loa provides the coffee plants with plentiful rainfall and moderate temperatures, giving them their unique flavor.  Though the elevations of Kona coffee farms are lower than the elevations of some of the world's top Arabica coffees, when it comes to coffee bean quality a bigger factor than elevation is how fast the coffee cherry (fruit) mature on the coffee plant, and the Kona region's growing conditions provide for a long maturation period.

We love coffee here in Hawai‘i. It  plays an important role in our local economy and ties us to our history. Our coffee a premium gourmet Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica var. typica) is 100% Kona grown and pesticide free.

At Nahenahe Farm we hand select and pick only the ripe cherries to ensure that only those at the peak ripeness are chosen. We then add our own personal touch during the small batch roasting process, focusing on bringing out the inherent fruitiness in a coffee while showcasing its natural sweetness.

Our coffee is known for its simple yet rich flavor, well-balanced with a medium body, a complex aroma, bright acidity yet classically balanced taste. Often exhibiting spicy and also buttery qualities with subtle winey tones, intensely aromatic, and with a great aftertaste/finish.

Our coffee, a medium/dark roast is clean and well-balanced with a full bodied and cheerful, bright acidity yet classically balanced.  Often exhibiting spicy and also buttery qualities with subtle winey tones, intensely aromatic, and with a great aftertaste/finish.

Nahenahe Farm was the dream of my late husband, Cyril Pahinui who was not only a master of Kī Hō'alu but also an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher. One of our mutual passions is supporting Hawaiian music and passing on the Slack Key tradition.

Here at Nahenahe Farm we work alongside Na'alehu Theatre, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization to gather resources for archiving music collections, event production, and providing Hawaiian Music Mentorship.

To support this effort we are developing a range of Hawai'i products with 100% of profit going toward bringing Hawaiian Music Masters into local schools to mentor youth in traditional music stylings. Through this work we hope to preserve and perpetuate the art form.

Our first project at the Nahenahe Farm, was the complete renovation of the 'Ohia Cottagea well-appointed 2 bedroom guest house in the heart of Kona's coffee belt that offers visitors a spacious and relaxing place to settle in and enjoy Kona's casual, unassuming island-style.

This unique offering comes with a sampling of our local products, pre-arrival consulting, and can include an assortment of personalized guest services. We hope you will come stay with us on your next adventure to Hawai'i Island. To receive the Friends and Family discount please email me in advance to booking.

COFFEE is next! We had an exceptional year here in Kona and our coffee is exceptional! We will soon be expanding our website featuring our own 100% Kona Coffee and adding many other Tropical Delights...stay tuned....
