This Harvard Business Review article presents research, conducted at a large South Korean e-commerce company, into the benefits of situating employees in a way that allows random encounters with colleagues outside of their departments or groups. The study finds a measurable increase in creativity, quality of work, and revenue among employees who are surrounded by more varied coworkers.
