Good morning from Destin, Florida, where I hung around for a couple of extra days after the close of this year's SEC Spring Meeting, and where I'm pretty sure I heard one of Steven Milam's home runs splashdown into the lake in front of my condo. LSU's freshman second baseman, all 5-foot-8, 172 pounds of him, bashed his way into a permanent place in Tiger baseball lore Friday. He launched a game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, his second of the game, as LSU walked off pesky Wofford 4-3 in the first game of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at the University of North Carolina. It's Milam's second walk off home run in three games — he also belted one to beat South Carolina in the SEC Tournament. According to LSU, he's the first Tiger with multiple walk off home runs in a single season. Did you miss Milam's monster mash? Well, you've certainly come to the right place. We've got the video for you right here. The Tigers (41-21) advanced to face No. 4 national seed North Carolina (43-13) on its home field at 4 p.m. CDT Saturday. The game will be on ESPN2. The Tar Heels needed even more dramatics than LSU to win Friday. UNC trailed the regional No. 4 seed Long Island 8-5 going into the bottom of the ninth before scoring six runs, including a walk off grand slam from Gavin Gallaher. Like Milam, it was Gallaher's second homer of the game. This was after LIU scored four in the top of the ninth to take that 8-5 lead. Wild stuff, huh? Can't wait for Saturday. By the way, Wofford and LIU meet in an elimination game at 11 a.m. CDT Saturday that was so close to being the winner's bracket game. Not all the news is good for LSU coming out of Chapel Hill. Our Koki Riley reports that reliever Christian Little will miss the entire regional after suffering an injury pitching in the SEC Tournament. Meanwhile, fresh off its super regional appearance, the LSU softball team has had a couple of pitchers enter the transfer portal. We tell you who right here. Before we go, a quick check of the U.S. Women's Open leaderboard from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Of the LSU contingent, only former Tiger Madelene Sagstrom made the cut. She's at 8-over par in a tie for 59th. LSU's Ingrid Lindblad, Latanna Stone and Aine Donegan all missed the cut. And former LSU All-American Sam Burns is in a tie for seventh heading to the weekend in the Canadian Open, four off the lead after sharing the first-round lead Thursday. Lastly, as you may have seen our columnist and bon vivant about town Smiley Anders died Friday at 86. Smiley was The Advocate to so many readers for so many years. I don't think I've ever known any writer at our paper who was so beloved, or who had such a strong sense of community. We'll miss you, Smiley. Thanks for the memories and for keeping us all connected. That's all for now, folks. Got to hit the road back to Baton Rouge. Thanks for reading and subscribing, and enjoy your sports weekend, everyone. Scott Rabalais |
