WHAT’S DRIVING THE AMERICAN JEWISH CONVERSATION

Good morning! Attorneys general warn Brown University not to boycott Israel, the controversy behind a new book about American Jewry, why every war movie feels like Gaza, meet the Jewish athletes competing at the Paralympics, and much more.

OUR LEAD STORY

Mort Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America, has weathered more than a decade of allegations that he has mismanaged the nonprofit. (ZOA)

Claims of ‘ego-driven jihad’ as feud escalates at Zionist Organization of America

Mort Klein, the ZOA’s longtime president, is facing a new lawsuit from two board members seeking to remove him from power over allegations that he received millions of dollars in unauthorized compensation from the organization while mismanaging it.

Boardroom drama: In July, 11 board members voted to investigate allegations of financial misconduct by Klein. On the same day, 11 other board members voted to declare the investigation “illegitimate.”

Credit cards and raises: Two of those board members claim in the lawsuit that Klein used ZOA funds to “support a lavish personal lifestyle,” including using a credit card from the nonprofit for personal use and receiving more than $5 million in unauthorized compensation from the group.

Insults fly: Marc Kasowitz, Donald Trump’s former attorney, is representing Klein. He called the allegations part of a “selfish and ego-driven jihad” and plans to countersue, a threat that Steven Goldberg, who represents the plaintiffs, called “the shriek of a frightened, cornered rat.”

ISRAEL AT WAR

When the second installment in the Dune franchise came out this year, some saw it as a metaphor for the Israel-Hamas war. (Warner Bros. Discovery)

Is every war movie about Israel and Gaza now?Dune, Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games, Star Wars — these are just a few of the movies and TV series seen as metaphors for the Israel-Hamas war, or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict more generally. As our culture writer Mira Fox points out, “the beauty of the best art and media is its ability to be interpreted and reinterpreted.” But is every movie about war or violence really such a perfect parable for the war?

Plus…

  • Jill Stein, the Green Party presidential candidate, said that she misspoke when she said that the war in Gaza “makes any genocide pale by comparison.”

  • Israel carried out raids and airstrikes aimed at terror groups in the occupied West Bank this morning, killing nine Palestinians.

  • An exhibition on the massacre at the Nova music festival that recently opened in Los Angeles is an immersive experience that is “at turns horrifying, inspiring and, most importantly, communal,” writes Josh Katz in an opinion essay.

“Given the cascade of crises and uncertainty that we’re all living through,” said Joshua Leifer, “I wanted to encourage American Jews to think more seriously and intentionally.” (Penguin Random House)

A new book about American Jewry is causing controversy. Here’s what it actually says: A canceled book launch. Surging sales on Amazon. Tablets Shattered by journalist Joshua Leifer shines a light on how mainstream Jewish organizations have failed a younger generation — and offers four paths forward.
