Strengthening European competitiveness: The Maltese perspective

This week, our President Fredrik Persson joined a delegation of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry – MCCEI, to engage in high-level discussions with Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela, other government ministers and company representatives.
The discussions focused on key business priorities, such as strengthening the EU Single Market, and the importance of a competitive business environment in achieving Europe’s ambitions. Persson also participated in MCCEI’s Annual General Meeting, where he highlighted the resilience of Europe’s industrial backbone amid growing global challenges. Malta and MCCEI play a vital role in shaping European policies that empower, rather than hinder, businesses.
“The challenges of insularity foster creativity and agility, and you can be confident that the work of The Malta Chamber is making a significant difference, shaping European policy, and driving real change”, he stated. With global competition intensifying, strengthening Europe’s competitiveness must be at the top of the EU agenda. Engaging with politicians and business leaders across Europe, including in Malta, is essential to ensuring that the right policies are in place to drive investment, innovation, and EU’s prosperity.

‘Empowering Europe’ panel discussion

Can simplification help drive investments and growth in Europe? How can competitiveness co-exist with Green Deal objectives to achieve a clean economy? These were some of the key questions explored at POLITICO’s “Empowering Europe" event yesterday. Our Director General, Markus J. Beyrer, joined EU policymakers and experts to discuss the path forward. “A strong industrial base, competitive energy costs, and significant reduction of regulatory burdens for companies are essential in bringing the economic ship back on track", he said.

Increasing European investments in Africa’s energy sector

Yesterday, a BusinessEurope delegation, led by Deputy Director General Luisa Santos and Africa Network Chair Benoît Chervalier, met with Commissioner for International Partnerships Josef Síkela, to discuss ways to increase private investment in Africa’s energy sector. Company representatives shared concrete examples of ongoing projects, key challenges, and business opportunities. The discussion also focused on how European tools like the Global Gateway can better support private sector engagement and drive impactful investments in favour of industrial development.

Quote of the week

“Europe is now at a turning point. If we fail to deliver on time, to really move competitiveness up the agenda…investment will continue to leave Europe at light speed”.
