Clean Trade and Investment Partnerships: Exchange with Commissioner Síkela |
Our Director General Markus J. Beyrer and Deputy Director General Luisa Santos met yesterday with European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela to exchange views on the EU’s new Clean Trade and Investment Partnerships (CTIPs). |
These targeted, flexible agreements form part of the external pillar of the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal. They aim to boost competitiveness, diversify supply chains, and accelerate the green transition. We support CTIPs as a valuable complement of traditional free trade agreements. While FTAs should remain a priority, more focused deals can deliver faster results in key areas like clean tech and critical raw materials. Business consultation is essential to ensure that CTIPs are effective. A key focus of the meeting was access to critical raw materials and support for local value chains. |
Beyrer and Santos underlined the need to prioritise partnerships with resource-rich countries. Reducing Europe’s reliance on single suppliers is crucial to mitigate economic security risks and build resilient, diversified supply chains. “CTIPs can become a powerful tool to deliver the green transition and strengthen Europe’s economic resilience, if designed in close dialogue with business,” said Beyrer. BusinessEurope will continue to work closely with the Commission to ensure CTIPs deliver tangible benefits for European industry. |

Top IP Offices meet industry |
This week, a delegation led by our Director for Legal Affairs, Pedro Oliveira, is participating in the annual meeting between the heads of the five largest intellectual property offices in the world (IP5) and industry leaders in Tianjin, China. Our key message: strong intellectual property frameworks are essential to bridge the gap between innovation and commercialisation. Representing 90% of global patent filings, the IP5 offices are key players in shaping a more efficient, user-friendly international patent system. Their cooperation with industry is essential to continue improving the efficiency of the examination process for patents worldwide. |
