Exchange with the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union on urgent business priorities |
|
Yesterday, our President, Fredrik Persson, met with Poland’s Finance Minister, Andrzej Domański, urging the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union to address the pressing business challenges. |
|
Key point on the agenda was the urgent need to reduce the regulatory burden on companies. “Bold action in this area would send a strong signal to the markets that Europe is serious about improving its regulatory environment and enhancing competitiveness”, Persson said. He also highlighted the importance of a balanced progress on Omnibus I, and that it remains true to its goals - not being used to reintroduce new measures nor bring back others initially removed in the original Commission proposal, such as turnover-based sanctions in the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. Discussing international trade, Persson underlined the need for a negotiated solution with the United States on tariffs, |
one that safeguards European interests while preserving the strength of the EU–US partnership, the largest economic relationship in the world. He further called for swift progress on the EU’s trade diversification strategy, including the prompt ratification of agreements with Mercosur and Mexico, as well as continued progress in negotiations with ASEAN countries and India. In particular, the EU-Mercosur agreement stands out as a crucial step in mitigating the negative effects of current geopolitical uncertainty, particularly stemming from U.S. actions. The deal is projected to save EU exporters over €4 billion annually by eliminating high tariffs and expanding access to key markets. |

“We are not in a normal situation. We have very comprehensive tariffs being imposed very quickly, with little time for companies to assimilate the changes, mostly introduced by our major trading partner. So, companies are very much affected”. Our Deputy Director General Luisa Santos featured in the “Trade Off” podcast published on 28 April. Listen to the episode here. |
