| On 19 November, BusinessEurope President Fredrik Persson and Director General Markus J. Beyrer met with António Costa, the President-elect of the European Council, to discuss pressing priorities for the EU’s next political cycle. The conversation focused on strengthening Europe’s economic resilience, addressing geopolitical challenges, as well as BusinessEurope’s role as a social partner and in shaping a more competitive Europe. |

During the discussion, our President and Director General shared insights on the business community’s expectations for the new political cycle and concerning relations with the U.S., China and India.
In view of the challenging macroeconomic outlook and the difficult geopolitical situation, they emphasised the importance of pursuing sound economic policies in order to get the EU economy back on track. |
| For instance, the new Clean Industrial Deal must be ambitious in its efforts to reduce regulatory burdens on businesses while fostering growth. Other key actions discussed include speeding up permitting procedures, reducing energy costs, addressing labour and skills shortages, fostering innovation and diversifying trade partnerships to mitigate risks in our supply chains. The meeting underscored the necessity of collaboration between policymakers and stakeholders to reinforce Europe’s economic resilience and enhance its global competitiveness. |

SMEs need better, smarter regulations! |

 | | Together with SMEunited and Eurochambres, we reassessed the application of the SME Test across European Commission services. Key findings revealed ongoing inconsistencies in its application and highlighted areas for improvement, such as respecting consultation periods and better presenting gathered input. On a positive note, SMEs' views were fairly represented in 80% of cases. Presenting the new joint paper at the SME Assembly on 19 November, our SME Committee Chair, Fabrice Le Saché, urged the next Commission to adopt our recommendations to enhance policymaking that is tailored to the SMEs needs.
