Strengthening dialogue with China amid global trade tensions

BusinessEurope Director General Markus J. Beyrer met yesterday with H.E. Cai Run, Chinese Ambassador to the EU, to discuss the current state of EU–China trade relations and the wider global context.
The meeting came at a crucial moment for international trade, with rising geopolitical tensions and ongoing uncertainty making investment decisions increasingly complex. In the discussion, Beyrer underlined that in response to the widespread disruption caused by the US tariffs, both Europe and China, two of the world’s largest trading partners, should seek stability and support the multilateral rules-based trade order. “The alternative is a dysfunctional system that puts global economic stability at risk.” Looking at the EU-China relationship, he reiterated the importance of addressing persistent imbalances and improving market access for European companies.
China’s supply-side policies have significantly contributed to the growing trade imbalance with the EU. “We count on China to shift focus toward demand-side policies, which will also support China’s economic recovery”, Beyrer said. In addition, he called for concrete action that shows China’s commitment to a more reciprocal relationship with the EU. With China being the EU’s largest source of imports (21.3%) and third-largest export destination (8.3%) in 2024, ensuring a level playing field and quality investment conditions remains a top priority.

Quote of the week

“A competitive, forward-looking tax framework is key to Europe’s competitiveness and leadership in advanced tech. As we drive the digital and green transitions, tax policies must enable, not hinder, investment and innovation. This means prioritising neutrality in tax design”.
