Message to the European Parliament: The EU must strengthen its global engagement

Our Deputy Director General Luisa Santos met with MEP Bernd Lange, Chair of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, yesterday to discuss the EU’s trade policy, including its relations with two major trading partners, the USA and China.
Santos stressed that the EU must step up its global engagement to safeguard economic security and resilience. “The current geopolitical environment makes a compelling case for the EU to engage more with the world,” she said. Santos highlighted the importance of securing access to critical raw materials and expanding business opportunities for European exporters.
She also underlined the stabilising role of trade agreements in uncertain times. “With rising global tensions and supply chain disruptions, we need predictable and reliable trade frameworks. Agreements provide businesses with the confidence they need to invest and grow.” As global challenges intensify, strengthening the EU’s trade partnerships will be key to ensuring a resilient and competitive European economy.

Quote of the week

"As BusinessEurope have set out in their report this autumn, there remains many unnecessary barriers to trade and investment following the election of new governments in the EU and UK, there is a clear opportunity to upgrade the relationship to deliver for businesses and citizens. I agree with them."

European Affairs Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds quoted in The Independent on 4 February after speaking at the EU-UK Forum in Brussels.
