Situational Analysis | October 12, 2023

It's Thursday and National Pulled Pork Day. 🐷

What You Need to Know

  • Heidi Balderree is the winner of last night's special election to replace Sen. Jake Anderegg. At 11:10 pm, after 6 rounds of voting, Balderree came out the winner in a field of 13 candidates.

  • Republicans in the U.S. House have selected Rep. Steve Scalise to be the nominee for Speaker, in a closed-door 113-99 vote of the GOP caucus. However, he needs to find more than 100 votes to hit the 217 number it will take to actually become the Speaker. He can only afford to lose 4 Republican votes, assuming no Democrats cross party lines to support him.

Utah’s economy confirms elite status with high labor force participation and low unemployment

The Salt Lake Chamber, in partnership with the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah, has released the September 2023 Roadmap to Prosperity Economic Dashboard to support business leaders in understanding impacts on Utah’s economy. This tool prioritizes key data on the state’s economic outlook and actionable context for decision-makers.

“Amidst the economic landscape, where concerns about inflation echo in the halls of Washington D.C., Utah stands as a beacon of stability. And while inflation has crept up in recent months, Utah’s economy remains strong with a high labor force participation rate and low unemployment,” said Derek Miller, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber. “These positive trends are a testament to the business community’s ability to navigate uncertainties, including those emanating from Washington D.C., and this dashboard is a great indicator of Utah’s continued economic resilience and strength.” (Read More)
