Helldivers take deep dive into adventure

Members of the Helldivers spearfishing club hunt for their quarry in the waters below oil rigs off Louisiana's coast, plunging into the murky water, weapons in hand, and scanning the depths for a worthy opponent. Their targets include a gamut of sea life including stingrays, amberjack, crevalle jack, cobia, and the elusive warsaw grouper.

The divers take safety precautions, but plenty of dangers abound. Still, the adrenaline rush can make it a hard habit to break.

“It's an addiction,” member Mike Aucoin said. But like any veteran junkie, “You have to weigh risk and reward.”

Findings from a new study indicate that much of the Gulf Coast is facing an intensifying storm surge that may be worsening more than previously thought. The causes are still being determined, but warming waters and accompanying rising seas could be main contributors, scientists from Princeton, Tulane and other institutions say.
