Dearest Readers,
Every now and again, we publish something that is particularly close to my heart. As the EiC, I try very hard not to have favorites (though I have been known to say things like, What's the point of being in charge if you can't break your own rules), but objectivity is a lie and sometimes things are so special that I do have favorites. Many of you might remember that Jay Hopler, a beloved poet and teacher, passed away earlier this year, shortly after the publication of his recent collection, Still Life. Though I'd never taken a class with him, Jay was one of the professors at my small MFA program, and he was a hilarious and brilliant force in several of my friends' lives. Around the time of Jay's passing, I'd been in the process of corresponding with him and Kimberly Johnson, his wife, about the writing of Still Life, which I'd found remarkable. Now, a few months later, Kimberly, who is herself a brilliant poet and editor, was generous enough to share her thoughts about the publication of Still Life alongside her own most recent collection, and about "the living that makes poetry meaningful." I am beyond grateful that she has gifted us with this writing, and I hope you'll find it as precious as I do.
Till next time, ASp.s. We're still in the middle of our end of year MEMBER DRIVE. We currently have 328 active members with 272 supporters needed to reach our end of year goal. Please, HELP! |
