Dear Supporter, Raisa, 88, was sleeping when a missile struck her apartment building in the city of Zaporizhzhia in the middle of the night. At first, she didn’t realise what was happening.
“I heard the humming of dozens of engines outside my window,” she said. “Only then did I realise that a rescue team had arrived on site to save our lives.”
“Many people died on that day,” Raisa said. “Outside, excavators were working, scraping away the rubble, what remained from our homes and things that we used to love. It was horrifying.”
Raisa managed to grab a few belongings and climb out a window. She was fortunate to survive the attack, which claimed the lives of 13 people, including a child.
Raisa is now staying at a shelter with other people left homeless from the blast. UNHCR has given Raisa and others impacted by the missile strike, bedding, hygiene supplies and other relief items, as well as psychosocial support to help her cope with her trauma.
People like Raisa are facing violence and terror every single day.
