| Editor's Picks Program coordinators often find themselves acting as sounding boards for the frustrations residents are facing, and also as people residents can talk to and trust with their personal feelings. This is a very important role during the holidays. Residents face the inevitability that at some point they will be on call and not able to enjoy the holidays with their family and friends. Regularly scheduled didactic sessions are required for every residency program. A didactic session may take many forms, such as formal lectures, journal clubs, case discussions, workshops, simulation training about patient care and procedures, and computer-based learning modules. Malpractice claims continue to rise, with plaintiffs winning more cases that go to trial than ever before. With the dollar amounts awarded in verdicts and the costs of settling a case rising, so have malpractice insurance premiums. Residents should educate themselves on the factors contributing to the rise of malpractice claims and on common best practices to avoid being named in a lawsuit.
