It is essential that strong conservation voices be heard by the commission.

Dear Friend,

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area in San Luis Obispo County is the only state park on public dunes and beach in California that allows three- and four-wheel off-highway vehicles to tear up the landscape.

This park has been violating its California Coastal Commission Development Permit for 37 years.

Take Action

The Coastal Commission staff is finally asking the commission to amend the park’s permit for stronger short-term protection and to ultimately phase out off-highway vehicle traffic on the sensitive dunes.

Please help make sure the Commission accepts the staff recommendation. Attend the hearing on July 11 in San Luis Obispo and voice your support for the new proposal. Also, send an email now to the Commission urging that it protect Oceano Dunes.

For years, off-road vehicle use on the dunes has threatened and killed nesting birds, including the least tern and snowy plover. It has produced substantial air pollution, and hindered access and enjoyment of the beach by parks visitors.

It is essential that strong conservation voices be heard by the commission. The off-highway vehicle lobby will certainly try to pack the meeting.

Please attend and support the dunes and the Coastal Commission staff recommendation. If you can't make the meeting, you can still be heard by sending a comment email now.

Thanks for your help!

Sincerely,
Kathryn Phillips
