Improve Wikipedia for Artists of Color

Crafting a Better Wikipedia: Women of Color in the Renwick Gallery
Thursday, March 30, 1 – 3:30 P.M. ET

During this online edit-a-thon, any participant with a computer and internet access can create or improve Wikipedia articles for 41 women artists of color featured in the Smithsonian American Art Museum's current exhibition This Present Moment: Crafting a Better World.

As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many who want to learn about art and artists. However, less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as women. These percentages are even lower for biographies of women artists who have engaged with historically marginalized craft practices like quilting, ceramics, and basketry. Your participation can make a difference!

This online edit-a-thon is cohosted by the SAAM and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; training will be provided. No background in art history is required. Attendees of all Wikipedia experience levels are encouraged to join to learn and share more about these 41 wonderful artists.
