Paradise (soon to be) lost? Our quest to publish a guide to Socotra

‘Until 2020, “Socotra!” was my answer to every bucket-list question. And a few months ago I finally went with my friend and co-author Janice (aged 81) – and came home fixated on this Yemeni island in the Arabian Sea: its beauty, its multiple endemic species, its friendly people, its bizarre landscapes.

'Janice and I were determined to write a guidebook. But then Covid-19 struck, and the project became a commercial impossibility, and in June Socotra suffered a non-violent coup. The resulting instability threatens its future, its unique plants and wildlife, and its status as a World Heritage Site. The outside world knows little about this impending danger.

‘We can change this! A guidebook can raise Socotra’s profile, so that inappropriate political manoeuvres are more visible. It can bring more tourists to the island, who in turn can affect public opinion. Increased tourism will mean – it always does – that the natural resources for which the tourism exists will receive greater protection. And so we’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign to enable the book to happen. Please, join us in saving the future of this very special little island.’
