There have been more than 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills tracked by the ACLU this year. At the same time, there have never been more out LGBTQ+ people in history than there are now. It’s a complicated time for LGBTQ+ people. It’s also a complicated time for their stories.

As The Advocate’s newsroom leader, I’ve had the privilege to assign, edit, and publish queer stories from big cities to small towns, from the U.S. to other parts of the world.

The stories of our community often go unheard, are misrepresented, or are used for the wrong reasons. LGBTQ+ journalism exists to reveal the realities of being a part of this community. It gives a voice to those frequently silenced.

Recently, The Advocate covered the Democratic National Convention, a gay business owner recovering from Hurricane Helene, and an organization helping shepherd patients to locations where they can access gender-affirming care and abortions.

The Advocate works to tell stories about our community, for our community, and with our community. And we have been telling these stories since 1967 — when we were founded as a newsletter after an antigay police raid on the Black Cat Tavern in Los Angeles.

With your help, we’ll continue telling our community’s stories for years to come. Please consider supporting this work by investing in The Advocate.

Onward,

Alex Cooper
