What about that low-key position of need?

It's Tuesday morning, which means there are less than 72 hours between us and the start of the 2022 NFL draft, which means you've had so much time to read all those mock drafts pinning the Saints with a wide receiver or an offensive tackle or a quarterback in the first round.

Alright, guilty as charged, I have written one such mock draft.

But might there be another sneaky position out there few people are thinking about when it's the Saints' turn at No. 16 or No. 19? A position that's a little less sexy than the guys throwing and catching touchdown passes, but critical to the Saints' success all the same?

Put another way: Should we be watching out for a defensive tackle in New Orleans in the early rounds of the draft?

My colleague, Amie Just, takes that idea and unspools it here in the last segment of our series playing out the best case scenarios for the Saints at a couple positions of need.

New Orleans returns much of its defensive interior from last year, but that group was not the least bit productive.

Coming off a suspension to start the year, David Onyemata never found his top form, finishing the season with his worst sack (2) and tackle for loss (2) totals since 2017. The rest of the Saints defensive tackles combined for five tackles for loss and zero sacks.

As Just points out, the Saints have other needs that appear more pressing than the defensive interior, and it would not be a surprise to see the Saints go, say, tackle/receiver with their first two picks.

Then again, this is a team that has traditionally used its high-level resources to fortify its lines. Would it be a surprise to anyone to see New Orleans snag someone like the University of Georgia's physical freak Jordan Davis if he's available in the middle of the first? I can at least tell you it wouldn't surprise me.

We'll have a lot more draft-related articles coming your way in the next few days, but in the meantime, make sure you check out the latest on the Alvin Kamara legal situation. The latest, in this instance, is that a resolution is not coming any time soon.

We've got so much more in the works for you this week. Stay tuned and keep it locked right here.

Cheers,

Luke Johnson
